At a Glance
- Variety: Chenin Blanc
- Surface Area: 0.87 ha (2.15 ac)
- Vine Age: Planted in 2001 and 2005
- Terroir: La Martinière (monopole), Rochefort Sur Loire, at the foot of a hillside on the right bank of the Layon river, south and southwest-facing, steep slope (30-40% grade), stony soil with Briovérien schists, sandstones and puddingstones. The humidity from the river allows the Botrytis to develop quickly and intensely.
- Viticulture: Organic (Ecocert), biodynamic (Biodyvin). 5,000 vines/ha, short pruning, manual de-budding and leaf thinning.
- Vinification: Harvested in multiple passes, pressed with whole clusters, pressed for 10+ hours, settled, ambient yeast fermentation and aging for 5-10 months in 228-400 L barrels (some new), the fermentation stops naturally after a few months, filtered with diatomaceous earth.
Additional Info
The harvest team passes multiple times in the vineyard (three times in 2015 and 2016) in order to pick only botrytized grapes. Average yields are very, very low for this parcel, about 6 hectoliters per hectare.
The Ogereau family started with this parcel in 2015. They've found that botrytis develops and concentrates earlier in the season in this vineyard, and that the terroir gives a characteristic minerality to the wine with a slight bitterness and acidity on the finish.
