A flakey, brownish-black mineral in the mica family found in igneous and metamorphic rocks. Contains iron and magnesium. (Mica minerals grow in flat, plate-shaped crystals that are responsible for the layered schistose texture, or schistocity, of metamorphic rocks such as schist)
