    Vintage-2014

  • It’s a new year, almost time for a new vintage, and 2014 Burgundies are already garnering lots of attention.

Neal Martin’s assessment of 2014? “All Sweetness & Light”

“The white 2014s are extraordinarily good. They are often brilliant. A cornucopia of delights! I’m not the only voice espousing that view but frankly it is undeniable from tasting these nascent wines. (…) They shimmer with coiled-up energy that from time to time was unprecedented with respect to that particular domaine. (…) At their best the white 2014s are electrifying, Chardonnay plugged into the mainline.”

“Within the Côte de Nuits, I found the wines fresh, tensile, mineral-driven and vivid. Naturally, Burgundy-lovers gravitate towards Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin but the more astute might seek out some of the excellent wines from the beleaguered Savigny-lès-Beaune, Aloxe-Corton and then up to the northern part of the Côte d’Or, especially Marsannay that produced a raft of over-performing and generally great value-for-money wines. Check out the likes of Jean Fournier and Sylvain Pataille, Bruno Clair and Joseph Roty.”

For Allen Meadows, 2014 is all about “beguiling freshness coupled with first-rate drinkability”:

“I am avidly enthusiastic about the 2014 vintage in the Côte de Nuits. (…) There is a beguiling freshness coupled with first-rate drinkability that makes the 2014s extremely pleasurable. Often vintages that are approachable young are that way because they have lowish acidities, below average concentration or very high levels of ripeness, yet 2014 is none of those things. As if these positive features weren’t enough, consider that 2014 is extremely consistent not only in terms of where very good to excellent wines were produced in the Côte de Nuits but also up and down the appellation hierarchy.”
